Popis

Shell rather large, up to 76 mm. (3 inches) in length, solid, depressed, stellate, very strongly sculptured with sharply carinated, radial ridges, that project well-beyond the margin, seven of them much stronger than the rest; apex at anterior third to submedian. Colour of exterior dull-black, when not eroded, to a rusty-brown; interior bluish white, with a narrow black margin, and a yellowish brown spatula, the latter clouded with a white callus in senile specimens. Height: 60-75 mm; Width 55-75 mm; Height: 12-23 mm. Radula: Formula 3+ 1 + (2+1+2) + 1 + 3, somewhat similar to that of cochlear in the form of the cusps, which are leaf-shaped with a median groove, and in the massive lateral that has four cusps.

The « Long-Ribbed Limpet » is a spectacular limpet characterised by long spine-like digits displayed in a « star-burst » pattern, native to South Africa and southern Mozambique. The digit development is extremely variable and so is sculpture strength; many specimens have short and subdivided digits as opposed to the long-digit form depicted here. A comrn.on grazing gastropod inhabiting mid to low tide zones of intertidal rocky shores, it is known to exhibit territorial behaviour as part of the mutualistic relationship with the brown algae Ralfsia verrucosa Areschoug, 1845. R. verrucosa is the limpet's preferred food species and the limpet clears away new settlement space for R. verrucosa by grazing away existing vegetation. After R. verrucosa establishes in the new territory, the limpet fascilitates its growth by fertilisation using mucus and faeces as well as prying intruding organisms from the territory. The algae therefore gains new habitat protected by the limpets and the limpets in return gets a constant supply of their favourite food by 'farming'. The limpet's long digits are considered to have evolved to increase efficiency in prying intruders as well as to increase surface area of attachment to the rock. Typical shell length around 60mm., very large specimens may exceed 90mm.

Možné záměny

This species is easily recognised by its depressed star-shape, with the primary ribs extending well-beyond the margin, which is narrowly bordered in black.

Rozšíření

South Africa, from Oudekraak west side of Cape Peninsula, eastward to Umpangazi, north of Durban. This species occurs commonly in the lower Balanoid and Cochlear zones.
