Popis

Shell between 10 and 22 mm, lightweight, solid and ovate. Spire covered by callus. Body whorl sub-triangular, inflated and rounded, about 80% of total height, with both terminals slightly produced. Both terminal tips blunt. Dorsum profile roundly elevated, completely covered by few, fine, widely spaced ribs - about 12 on average - with a deeply incised, long, smooth sulcus mid-dorsally that bisects the ribs. Dorsal ribs thickened and forming nodules on both sides of the sulcus. Ventrum slightly convex with recurved terminals. Shell periphery slightly callused and edged. Aperture narrow over its entire length widened only barely at the fossular section. Aperture straight in its mid-portion but curved posteriorly. Labrum roundly callused, wide, slightly curved, keeled towards its inner margin. Labrum bears on its inner margin on average 17 rather coarse denticles. The denticles are partly formed by the ribs others are just developed at the inner labral margin. Siphonal and anal canals follow the shell profile. Columella slightly curved, narrow and tapering steeply inwards. Parietal lip somewhat sinuous, slightly keeled especially at the fossular section, crossed by on average 12 ribs. Fossula concave and not clearly delimited from the rest of the columella. Inner fossular edge slightly protruded. Shell colour brown with darker, more brilliant colour along the dorsal sulcus. Sulcus and nodules whitish. Peripheral edge, ribs and terminal collars of lighter shell colour. Inner labral edge, columella, fossula and canals pure white.
VARIATIONS
Some shells have a more circular outline. Terminal tips are often slightly indented. The shell colour varies in any shades of brown, and the ventrum might be of lighter colour. The shell periphery is also sometimes almost white. The mantle lobes can vary from yellowish brown with yellowish and dark brown dots and brownish papillae to purplish drab with white and black dots and purplish papillae.

Možné záměny

Cate (1979: 105) introduced Pusula (Pusula) padreserrai as distinct species different to P. solandri (Gray in G.B. Sowerby I, 1832) and remarked. 'This species could possibly be an analogue of the Gulf of California species Pusula (Pusula) solandri ... Although they may appear to be somewhat similar when one compares the figure illustrations herein, the illusion seems to end there. The shells themselves, when brought together, are easily separable and distinct from one another. Pusula (P.) padreserrai differs from P. (P.) solandri by having a much larger, lightweight shell; by being more widely, roundly ovate, rather than narrowly so as in P. (P.) solandri ...; by having a subsphcrical, highly elevated shell in which dorsal rib-ending tubercles are very much more fine, less obtrusive. The shell colour is completely different, a mixture of pale fawnish-pink and beige; the colours of P. (P.) solandri being characteristic mauve colour, with the colour deepening in a longitudinal line at the base of the very large dorsal rib-ending tubercles, whereas in the Sowerby species ribs are bright, off-white. The shell ribbing in this new species is considerably finer and more delicately sculptured." Gosliner & Liltved (1987: 236) studied animals of P. radians (see discussion to P. radians) from various localities of the Gulf of California and from Central California and stated, "Cate (1979) stated that T. padreserrai differs from T. solandri in its colour, shape and prominence of ribbing. Cate also suggested that T. solandri is found within the Gulf of California, while T. padreserrai is found from the central California to the Pacific coast of Baja California. Examination of specimens from southern California and the Gulf of California, in this study, permits the detailed comparison of the two taxa. The colouration and morphology of the living animals are identical. Both are purplish with white and black spots and possess compound papillae. The conchological differences noted by Cate are subject to considerably overlap even within a single population. The radula exhibits no significant differences in specimens from the two localities. The reproductive morphology is also consistent between the two populations. The two female specimens of T. solandri from the Gulf of California each had a pair of receptacula. In the specimens from the Channel Islands the specimen from San Clemente Island had a pair of receptacula while the specimen from Santa Barbara Island had three receptacula. There is no significant basis for maintaining the separation of the two taxa, and T. padreserrai is here considered as a junior subjective synonym of T. solandri on basis of priority."
