Sister group of Violaceae are Passifloraceae. Other close relatives within the order are Salicaceae, Achariaceae and Lacistemataceae.
On the most basal position within the family is genus Fusispermum, which forms a separate subfamily and shows intermediate characters between Violaceae and Passifloraceae.
